What is phototherapy and how do LifeWave patches work

Reading time: 4 minutes  •  Level: beginner

You may have already heard about LifeWave patches from your Brand Partner, but you're wondering what's actually behind this technology. Below we explain what phototherapy is, how it works in broad strokes, and how this principle shows up in the patches you wear every day.

What phototherapy is

Phototherapy, also known as light therapy, is a non-invasive method in which the body is exposed to certain wavelengths of light, because the body's cells respond naturally to light, and this response can support the body's own regenerative processes. This approach underlies several modern wellness technologies, since light, depending on its color and intensity, can influence cellular activity differently.

Phototherapy

The three main types of light

•  Blue light, often associated with reducing inflammation and caring for skin prone to conditions such as acne.

•  Red light, said to stimulate collagen production and support the skin's natural repair process.

•  Infrared light, which penetrates deeper into tissue, which is why it's often associated with easing muscle and joint discomfort.

General benefits associated with phototherapy

Phototherapy is generally associated with supporting circulation and with improved muscle and joint comfort, as well as with speeding up the natural processes through which skin recovers after minor irritation. At the same time, this method is also frequently used in dermatological care, since light can help calm the appearance of skin prone to inflammation. Last but not least, controlled light exposure is also associated with a more balanced mental state, since it can influence the body's natural rhythm of producing serotonin and melatonin.

How LifeWave patches apply this principle

Unlike other wellness products, LifeWave patches don't contain herbs, active ingredients, or medication, but instead work on a different principle, called non-transdermal, which means nothing passes through the skin into the bloodstream. Instead, each patch uses a patented matrix of organic crystals that interacts with the infrared energy your own body naturally emits, known as biophotons, meaning the extremely faint light emissions your cells produce. In practice, the patch reflects this energy back onto the skin, at specific points, in a way similar to the principles behind acupuncture and acupressure, which means the technology relies on your body's own resources, rather than introducing any additional substance.

Important: LifeWave patches are photobiomodulation products intended for general wellness, not for diagnosing, treating, curing, or preventing any disease, so all of the information above is for educational purposes only.

The story behind the technology

LifeWave's technology was created by David Schmidt, who founded the company in 2004, with the stated goal of finding ways for people to support their energy and well-being without turning to substances with potentially harmful effects. Over the years, he has been granted more than 130 patents worldwide, over 70 of which are in the field of regenerative science and technology, including a patent received in 2020 for a wearable phototherapy device, which underlies the technology used in the X39 patch as well. The company has also carried out several of its own studies, examining how the patches may influence certain biological markers [TO VERIFY: exact name and number of studies currently published], though, as is the case with any product intended for general wellness, results remain an individual experience that depends on each person's own body.

Recap

So, phototherapy is, in essence, a method that uses light to support the body's natural processes, and LifeWave patches apply this principle in a non-invasive, non-transdermal way, by reflecting your own infrared energy back onto your skin. This technology is built on years of research and a significant number of patents, though it's important to remember that results always remain an individual experience, since LifeWave patches are photobiomodulation products intended for general wellness.
