◆ A trend that exploded, and a question too few people ask
Over the past year, “peptides” have become one of the most popular words in the health and longevity space. On TikTok, on Instagram, in wellness podcasts and in private clinics, peptides with technical names, such as BPC-157, Ipamorelin, CJC-1295, or Epitalon, are presented as solutions for fatigue, recovery, beauty, sleep, and anti-aging.
The numbers confirm the boom: the global injectable peptide market was estimated at $48.6 billion in 2025 and is projected to exceed $117 billion by 2035. About 84% of the market is represented by the injectable form, meaning the needle.
And yet, behind this trend lies a real problem that doctors are flagging more and more often. Dr. Jon LaPook, chief medical correspondent at CBS News, described the market for peptides bought online as a “gray market, like the wild West.”
This article answers three questions: what peptides are and why they matter, what the real risks of injecting them are, and whether there's a safer path.

◆ What peptides are, in plain terms
Peptides are short chains of amino acids, essentially the small “building blocks” the body uses to construct proteins. But their most important function isn't structural, it's informational.
Peptides are the body's messengers. They “talk” to cells and tell them what to do: repair a tissue, produce more collagen, regulate sleep, calm inflammation, strengthen immunity.
Two essential things to keep in mind:
• Your body produces peptides on its own, naturally. These are called endogenous peptides.
• As you get older, peptide levels decline. For a key peptide like GHK-Cu, plasma concentration drops from about 200 ng/ml at age 20 to under 80 ng/ml after age 60.
Here's the question driving the peptide industry: how do we bring peptide levels back to what they were at 30? The injectable industry offers a single answer: introduce them from the outside, with a syringe. But there's also a second path, discussed far less often: teach the body to produce them on its own.
◆ The real risks of injecting peptides
1. Uncertain legal status
In September 2023, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) placed 19 peptides on “Category 2,” the category for substances that “present significant safety risks.” On the list: BPC-157, Ipamorelin, CJC-1295, Thymosin Beta-4, Epitalon, Selank, Semax, and the injectable form of GHK-Cu. The reason cited: risk of immune reactions, impurities, and insufficient safety data. None of these peptides is approved as a drug.
2. Variable quality, a label that protects no one
Websites selling peptides hide behind the phrase “for research use only, not for human consumption.” In reality, the products are bought by people who inject them at home.
In December 2024, the FDA sent four simultaneous warning letters to major peptide sellers. By September 2025, the wave had grown: more than 50 letters in a single month. The biohacker community openly acknowledges that dosing can be off by 10 to 90%, and that contamination with bacteria, heavy metals, or even steroids can occur.
3. Documented adverse effects
By early 2025, the FDA had received more than 455 adverse event reports for compounded semaglutide alone, and more than 320 for tirzepatide, many due to self-administration dosing errors.
For anyone who thinks the “more exotic” peptides are safe, a few examples cited in the medical press: a 39-year-old man spent 3 days in intensive care, with severe rhabdomyolysis and kidney dysfunction, after injecting Melanotan II bought online (a case published in Clinical Toxicology, 2012). Dr. Eric Topol, American cardiologist and editor of the publication Ground Truths, has drawn attention to the fact that growth-stimulating peptides (TB-500, CJC-1295, Ipamorelin, Tesamorelin, BPC-157) could, in theory, accelerate the growth of dormant tumors, a risk observed in animal experiments. Dr. Elizabeth Yurth, a longevity physician, has described a patient who bought a peptide online and had a severe immune reaction.
4. Concrete criminal cases
In 2020, the US Department of Justice opened a criminal case against a Kentucky pharmacy (Tailor Made Compounding), which admitted to illegally distributing BPC-157, CJC-1295, Epitalon, Ipamorelin, Melanotan II, Selank, Semax, and other unapproved peptides. The forfeiture: nearly $1.8 million, from a single year of sales alone. Dr. Monica Wang, a Harvard professor, summed up the phenomenon this way: it's less about health and more about a product that sells, simple, fast, with the promise of control.

◆ An uncomfortable question
If peptides decline with age and the body needs them, there are two paths. The first: introduce them from the outside, with needles, with products of variable quality, with legal risk, with possible contamination and unknown long-term side effects. GHK-Cu is a copper peptide discovered in 1973 by Dr. Loren Pickart, an American biochemist, who observed that aging liver cells, put in contact with plasma from young donors, began functioning again like young cells. Today GHK-Cu is one of the most studied peptides in the regenerative literature, with documented effects on collagen synthesis, wound healing, and antioxidant defense.
The company cites studies on the X39 device (Connor et al., published in Internal Medicine Research – Open Journal), which showed an increase in blood GHK within 24 hours and in GHK-Cu within 7 days. A second, double-blind study, on 50 subjects with an average age of 63, documented increases in free amino acids in the blood, as well as improvements in short-term memory and sleep quality.
X49 → AHK-Cu, the peptide for strength, bones, and cardiovascular health
AHK-Cu is a copper peptide associated with bone density, hair follicles, and connective tissue remodeling. The company cites the X49 study (Connor et al., December 2022), which followed 20 women aged 40 to 80, over 60 days, and reported a reduction in a bone breakdown marker (NTx), alongside changes in several blood amino acids.
Alavida → Epithalamin, the pineal peptide associated with longevity
Epithalamin, also known as Epitalon, is a tetrapeptide described by Prof. Vladimir Khavinson at the St. Petersburg Institute of Bioregulation and Gerontology. Research published starting in 2003 suggests a role for this peptide in telomerase activity and telomere length, a mechanism associated with cellular aging, and more recent research, from 2025, has continued to explore this topic. It's important to note that the research remains, for the most part, at the laboratory study stage, and results can vary depending on the cell type studied.
Carnosine → carnosine, a di-peptide made of beta-alanine and histidine
Carnosine is an antioxidant and heavy-metal chelator, studied for its role in processes associated with cellular aging. The company cites a study (Nazeran and Blake-Greenberg), on 20 subjects, which reported improvements in the functional status of several organs after 2 weeks of use.
Glutathione → glutathione, the master antioxidant
Glutathione is the body's main antioxidant, with a role in the liver's detoxification processes. The company cites a study that documented a 3- to 4-fold increase in blood glutathione levels compared to baseline, and a second pilot study observed even larger increases. After 4 weeks of use, the study showed improvements in the functional status of several organs.
Aeon → anti-stress modulation
The company cites a study (Nazeran, 2012), double-blind and placebo-controlled, on 50 subjects, which documented an effect of the Aeon device on heart rate variability, an indicator associated with the balance between stress and relaxation, felt after about 20 minutes.
Important: LifeWave phototherapy devices are photobiomodulation products intended for general wellness, not for diagnosing, treating, curing, or preventing any disease. The studies mentioned above are cited by the company, and results always remain an individual experience.
